From space, the planet is blue
From space, the planet is the territory,
not of humans, but of the whale.

An observation network of the dolphins and whales in the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean

Many cruisers sail the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Very often, the best souvenir of their cruise is the encounter with cetaceans. However, the information concerning these observations is practically unused. The Ocean Observatory network has been created in order to centralize and to treat in a systematic way the observations carried in the Caribbean and the North Atlantic.

A simple and fast filling observation form is at your reach to signal your encounters with cetaceans. When you sail between islands or during an ocean passage, always keep it on board. If you meet with cetaceans, take a few minutes to write down some important information: position, day and hour, elements allowing species identification, number and animal behavior.

Attention!! The centers indicated on the form and on this site are the only places authorized by Ocean Observatory to collect the filled observation forms.

These data will be utilized to compile an "Atlas of Cetaceans Distribution" under the direction of Professor P.C. Beaubrun, of the Practical School d'Hautes Etudes(University of Montpellier).

In 1995 P.C. Beaubrun directed the production of the Preliminary "Atlas of Cetaceans Distribution of the Mediterranean Sea" based on almost 11,000 observations by hundreds of observers.

Special Crossings:

The distribution of marine mammals in open Ocean is totally unknown. The record of observations provided by boats on passage is the only source of information on the presence of cetaceans.

All skippers and boats engaged in Ocean passages can make their contribution to this project, thereby adding their enjoyment of the passage to useful contribution towards the knowledge of these magnificent animals.

So, before departing, contact Ocean Observatory (info@ocean-observatory.org) to obtain a supply of observation form for "Special crossings".
